The MA Education (Science) aims to reflect contemporary theory in all aspects of practice in science education: international, formal and informal. Participants study with an international group and tutors are leaders in their research fields.

Modes and duration
Attendance is different for each module. Generally, it is once a week for the term (virtually or face-to-face). E.g. Attendance for Foundations in Science Education is every evening for 10 weeks.
Tuition fees (2020/21)
Note on fees: The tuition fees shown are for the year indicated above. Fees for subsequent years may increase or otherwise vary. Further information on fee status, fee increases and the fee schedule can be viewed on the UCL Students website. Fees for flexible, modular study are charged pro-rata to the appropriate full-time Master's fee taken in an academic session.
The minimum entry requirement is a second-class Bachelor's degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. However, those who do not meet the minimum requirements should contact the Programme Leader. Work experience will be taken into account.

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, you will be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.

About this degree
The MA Education (Science) will increase understanding of the academic theory of both education and science education. It enables students to critically evaluate research and development in the field, apply scientific ideas to the practice of science education in formal and informal contexts and give insights into contemporary developments in science education.
Students take modules to the value of 180 credits
The programme consists of:
3 compulsory modules (30 credits x 3), 1 optional module (30 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits).
3 compulsory modules (30 credits x 3), 2 optional modules (30 credits x 2) and a report (30 credits).
Applicants who have completed their PGCE within the last 5 years may be able to transfer over 60 credits.
Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded a MA in Education (Science).

All students undertake either a dissertation (60 credits) or a report (30 credits) in science education. Both will be based on a piece of original research that spans one year.

Teaching and learning
The MA Education (Science) is taught through a combination of face-to-face and online. The compulsory module, Foundations of Science Education, is studied with nine sessions face-to-face and one online task or online. What is Education? and Understanding Research modules can be studied face-to-face, online, or through a short intensive summer programme.
Full time - one third face to face (including lectures and disseraton tutorials), the remainder independent study
Part time/Flexible mode - Three hours per taught session, at least one day a week of independent study.

Students will develop their research skills over the duration of the course where they will be able to critically evaluate research and development in the field. Those that are practicing teachers or educators will develop their skill set as a teacher by linking theory to practice and engaging in a range of different perspectives related to science education.
