There has been a radical digital shift in the built environment sector, particularly in construction. The Digital Engineering Management MSc responds to the ongoing industry need for greater understanding and analysis for how pioneering digital technologies shape and are shaped by organisations, projects and supply chains. This innovative and much-needed programme addresses this digital gap by developing leaders and managers for the built environment sector.
Modes and duration
Full time students attend four full weeks in T1, and two days a week for 10 weeks in T2. Part time/flexible students attend two full non-consecutive weeks in T1, and one day a week for 10 weeks in T2

A minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor’s degree from a UK university in a relevant subject (including engineering, mathematical-based science, built environment), or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. In exceptional cases, a lesser academic qualification combined with substantial professional experience and demonstrable academic ability will allow acceptance onto the programme.

About this degree
The programme addresses the industry need for responding to digital transformation through a socio-technical approach. Digital engineering describes the integration of various digital technologies, such as mixed realities, big data analytics and Building Information Modelling (BIM) that transform construction. The students will be taught through an engineering management framework, encompassing the following knowledge areas:
- Organisation – understanding how firms are transformed by digital innovations,
- Project and process – learning socio-technical skills for engineering management,
- Engineering – constructing the digital thread across the lifecycle using various digital tools.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The programme consists of eight compulsory modules (120 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits).
Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded a MSc in Digital Engineering Management.

With a balanced curriculum with a theoretically-informed and commercial focus, the programme provides students with a well-balanced mix of organisation and project management theory as well as engineering practice through all the following eight modules plus the dissertation.

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words (60 credits). This is an original piece of research conducted with guidance from a supervisor.
Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of teacher-led and student-led teaching including lectures, seminars, group tutorials/workshops, Harvard case teaching method, and individual supervision for the research-based dissertation element. Assessment is through examinations, 2,500-word written term papers, smaller digital deliverables, group work and the 10,000-word dissertation.
As the programme features a combination of teacher-led and student-led teaching including lectures, seminars, group tutorials/workshops, Harvard case teaching method, and individual supervision for the research-based dissertation element, the contact hours and self-directed study vary across the modules. In principle, 25% of a student’s time is spent in student-led teaching (such as group tutorials/workshops, Harvard case teaching method), 25% in teacher-led teaching (such as lectures and seminars) and the remainder in independent study.

The programme is designed to equip graduates with the potential to become future innovators, leaders, senior managers, policy-makers and researchers in the areas of engineering management, digital innovation and project management. Organisations that are likely to employ graduates of this MSc include:

The MSc degree will enable built environment professionals to develop much-needed managerial and technical skills essential for addressing digital transformation in industry. The specific skills that will be acquired include (but are not limited to) project management, organisational management, communication skills, Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools, programming and data science. Eventually, each student will have the opportunity and freedom to focus on developing their desired skills and competences.

Because digital engineering is not constant but instead continuously evolving, this programme will provide the theoretical and practical tools to address these challenges within an engineering management framework.
