About this degree
Safe sedation practice requires the combination of applied basic science and clinical theory, practiced clinical skills, and experience managing risk. Students undertake an intensive on-campus training week in October before undertaking a clinical practice placement at our partner dental centre. Students return to campus in the Spring term for consolidation of their learning and preparation for exams. In addition to exams, students must complete a logbook of cases and undertake a quality improvement project related to sedation in their own practice. Students are supported by a personal tutor throughout the year.
Students undertake modules to the value of 60 credits.
The programme consists of four core modules worth 15 credits each.
Upon successful completion of 60 credits, you will be awarded a PG Cert in Dental Sedation and Pain Management.
Please note that the list of modules given here is indicative. This information is published a long time in advance of enrolment and module content and availability is subject to change.
Compulsory modules
- Conscious Sedation Pre-Clinical I
- Conscious Sedation Pre-Clinical II
- Conscious Sedation Clinical I
- Conscious Sedation Clinical II
Optional modules
- There are no optional modules for this programme.
Research project/report
Students undertake a quality improvement project in their own practice and submit a report detailing its impact. Reflective practice is also required.
Placement
Students undertake a 5-day clinical placement in a partner dental centre where they are supervised providing inhalational and intravenous sedation. The opportunity to pre-assess a small number of patients is also available and strongly encouraged.
Teaching and learning
In addition to clinical placement, students are taught using interactive lectures, small group teaching, clinical skills sessions, and high-fidelity simulation at the UCLH Learning Hospital.
Additional costs
Students are responsible for their own transport, accommodation and subsistence while attending campus or clinical placement.

Careers
Graduates of this programme will be qualified to expand their practice as operator sedationists and/or dedicated sedation practitioners. Being able to assure a comfortable dental experience has obvious benefits for patients and opens opportunities for practice with a wider variety of patient groups.
In addition to the benefits for patients and revenue, previous graduates have expanded their careers into sedation training and education, and research into sedation in dental practice.
Employability
Dental sedation is an increasingly in-demand service whether in your own practice or contracting your services to other practices.
