Dental Hygiene MSc

The programme will enable you to make evidence based assessments to facilitate clinical decision-making. It will serve to enhance your level of professional confidence and leadership skills through individual study, group project work, teamwork and organisational skills. This in turn may equip you to consider alternate employment settings such as allied healthcare leadership or teaching posts.

Part time: 3 years mixed-mode distance. This consists of online learning, attendance for practical lab based learning and clinical cases managed in the student’s workplace plus a dissertation project.

Entry requirements

All applicants must hold an approved dental hygiene qualification (diploma or bachelors) and be currently working as dental hygienist in practice with at least three years’ clinical experience post qualification.

English language requirements

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, you will be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.

About this degree

Students take modules to the value of 60 credits for each year of study totalling 180 credits for the three years..

The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits). All modules are compulsory.

Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded a MSc in Dental Hygiene.

Compulsory modules

All modules are compulsory and completed primarily online but there will be some compulsory residential weeks at the institute. In the first year, there will be two non-consecutive residential weeks. In the second and third year, there will be one residential week. Students must be physically present at UCL Eastman during these times. Note: Costs of accommodation and board are not covered.

Dissertation/report

In the third year of study all students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000-12,000 words (60 credits).

Teaching and learning

The modules will primarily be delivered online with block teaching at UCL Eastman* of practical skills, lab work, group seminars and discussions. Learning methods will be through flip teaching, exercises based on reading material, discussion sessions, and didactic lectures. Assessment takes place through clinical cases, written assessments, online quizzes, discussion forums and oral examinations.

While most of the programme is delivered online, students will be required to attend the UCL Eastman for two weeks in their first year, one week in their second and third years and attend for all exam dates. 

*Nb.For those starting in September 2020,  the residential weeks are likely to be held 19-23 October 2020 and 22-26 February 2021 (Please confirm with course administrator prior to application as attendance in compulsory)

Additional costs

In addition to tuition fees, students will be responsible for costs associated with travel, accommodation and meals associated with attendance of the residentaial weeks and examinations held at UCL Eastman Dental Institute.  The student will also be responsible for costs associated with access to or purchase of suitable oral photography equipment to enable documentation of clinical cases in their own practice setting.

Careers

This degree will enhance your knowledge and understanding of Dental Hygiene which can be applied in a clinical setting. The completion of the dissertation in year 3 will provide students with research and management skills enabling them to consider alternate employment pathways.

It will develop their ability to analyse or synthesise ideas and to organise complex materials in a lucid manner.  It will enhance their professional confidence, leadership skills, encourage teamwork and management skills.

Applications

Students are advised to apply as early as possible due to competition for places. Those applying for scholarship funding (particularly overseas applicants) should take note of application deadlines.
