Audiological Science with Clinical Practice MSc

The Audiological Science with Clinical Practice MSc is designed to train students from other disciplines as audiologists. This two-year programme includes a 12-month clinical placement and provides the core knowledge, skills and clinical competencies necessary for employment as an audiologist and/or hearing aid dispenser.

Note on fees: The tuition fees shown are for the year indicated above. Fees for subsequent years may increase or otherwise vary. Further information on fee status, fee increases and the fee schedule can be viewed on the UCL Students website. Full-time students undertake 180 credits in year one and 120 credits in year two. As such, the fee in year one will be £11,830 (UK/EU) / £25,900 (Overseas) but the fee in year two will be approximately two thirds of that in year one (subject to UCL's annual fee increase). For part-time students, the full-time fee indicated will be pro-rated based on module selection.

Optional qualifications: This degree is also available as a PG Diploma with fees set accordingly.

Entry requirements

A minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Candidates who do not meet this requirement but have a minimum of five years’ relevant clinical experience may also be considered.

Students will be expected to meet the requirements of the clinical placement’s human resource department (including satisfactory health clearance and Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check).

Progression to the clinical placement (second) year will be based on satisfactory academic performance and there being no fitness to practise issues.

English language requirements

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, you will be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.

About this degree

The programme provides a detailed study of the hearing and balance mechanisms, their structure, function, pathology and assessment.

The successful student will become competent in a wide range of adult hearing assessments and adult hearing amplification and aural rehabilitation. In addition, students will acquire skills that will allow them to assist in specialist areas, specifically balance and paediatric hearing assessments.

Students undertake modules to the value of 300 credits.

The full-time two-year programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a dissertation/report (60 credits) in the first year, and four core clinical modules (120 credits) in the second year.

The postgraduate diploma two-year programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) in year one, and four core clinical modules (120 credits) in year 2.

Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded a MSc in Audiological Science with Clinical Practice. Upon successful completion of 120 credits, you will be awarded a PG Dip in Audiological Science with Clinical Practice.

Covid-19 module updates
Due to COVID-19, there may be updates to the modules for your chosen programme of study this year. Some modules may not be available or may need to be moved to a later term or year of study.  We have included these updates below:   Balance (EARI0011), Living with Hearing Loss (EARI0017), and Integrative Audiology (EARI0018) will now run in Term 1. These updates are relevant for 2020-21 academic year only.  The full list of modules will be available in the module catalogue from late August.  From the first week of September, you will be invited to complete module selection from Portico, our student record system. There may need to be additional updates or changes to modules during the academic year to allow for new guidance from the UK Government and Public Health England. Your department shall keep you updated of these changes as they become available.  

Research project/report

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 –12,000 words and poster presentation. This is submitted at the end of year one.

Placement

EARI00013 - Clinical and professional practice module (15 credits) includes up to 20 days of observation in audiology departments within the Greater London area.

EARI0015 & EARI0016 - Clinical modules (90 credits). Clinical training within accredited audiology departments (NHS and /or private sector), mainly within London area but also in home counties surrounding Greater London area.


Covid-19 placement updates
Due to COVID-19 updates, there may need to be changes to planned placements for this programme. This will depend on social distancing measures, the availability of the relevant placements, and the relative risk of completing the placement. Your department will keep you updated if placements are able to occur and/or any alternative options available.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, case presentations, tutorials, enquiry-based learning, practical demonstrations and in-service clinical placements within accredited audiology departments in the NHS or private sector.

Assessment (formative and summative) is by essays, case presentations, mini -tests, final written and practical examinations, and dissertation.

YEAR 1 - 

Term 1-50% of week lectures /  tutorials; 20% practicals; 30% independent study

Term 2-40% of week lectures / tutorials; 40% clinical training placement; 20% independent study / research project

Summer term- Time working on independent project; primary contact with project supervisor 

YEAR 2 – 

Term1 - 3-5 days of lectures over the term (first Wednesday of the month); 90% of week clinical training placement; 10% independent study.

Term 2 - 20% of week is lectures / tutorials; 70% clinical practical training; 10% independent study.

Rest of year from October to September - 90% of week clinical practical training; 10% independent study.

25 days of non-study leave and bank holidays. 

Covid-19 contact hours on campus
In Term One, while campus will be open, all the learning activity for the core content of your modules will take place online – including lectures, tutorials, seminars and assessments. By “core content” we mean everything you need to learn to complete the module successfully. In addition to these online contact hours, we will be offering some face-to-face educational activities for students on campus, and we will provide alternative online activities for those students unable to join us on campus. These activities, which will include contact with academic staff, will be relevant to your programme of study may include seminars, academic and employability skills workshops, small-group or individual tutorials, lab and practice-based teaching. UK Government safety guidelines will limit the amount of ‘in person’ activity we can offer and while it will vary from programme to programme, is likely to be no more than 1-2 hours per week. This will vary across departments, particularly if your programme includes laboratory/practical/studio/workshop sessions. You will be updated with more specific details as they are available and your timetable will indicate which sessions will be on campus and which will be available online.
Covid-19 practical component updates
Due to COVID-19, there may be changes to the availability of the practical components for your chosen programme. Any updates relate only to the 20/21 academic year and may not apply to all students across the programme depending on your year of study.  Your department will keep you updated if the practical component of your programme is able to occur and/or any alternative options available.   There may need to be additional updates or changes to the practical component during the academic year to allow for new guidance from the UK Government and/or Public Health England. Your department shall keep you updated of these changes as they become available. 
Covid-19 assessment updates
There may be changes to the format of assessments for modules in this programme due to COVID-19. These will be summarised for each module on the module catalogue from 17 August 2020.   If any changes to assessments need to be made during the academic year due to updates in government guidance, these will be communicated to you as soon as possible from your department.    
Communicating further Covid-19 mitigation plans
We are continuing to follow UK Government guidance, as well as the expertise of our researchers, including specialists in health, education, human behaviour and infection prevention, to make sure UCL is as safe as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. If it becomes necessary to make further changes to your programme as a result of new guidance/regulations, UCL and your department will communicate these as soon as this becomes clear. Additional costs

Transport costs depend on home & placement locations but expect to pay £5 to £10.20 each day for attending placements (20 days in  year 1 & 42 weeks in year 2).  A few students may be placed in locations outside London (year 2) & additional  transport costs are £20 to £50 per day for attending lectures / exams at the Ear Institute (max 20 days). 

Students meet cost of Disclosure Barring Service certificate (£65) & overseas equivalent. Occupational health screen cost met by UCL but cost of necessary vaccinations met by students (TB immunity; hepatitis B; measles, mumps, rubella; chickenpox - cost dependant on current levels of immunity - up to £700 for all).

Careers

It is anticipated that the majority of students will seek employment as audiologists within the UK, in both the NHS and private sector. The main area of activity is adult hearing assessment and rehabilitation. As experience is acquired, audiologists might develop an interest and expertise in balance assessment and rehabilitation, paediatric audiology, tinnitus, cochlear implants, middle ear implants, and bone-anchored hearing aids.

With further experience, it is anticipated that graduates might also move towards management, research or teaching.

Employability

Although the programme is vocational and career-specific (audiology), some of our graduates have pursued academic careers, completing PhDs and taught doctorates. International students have used the knowledge and skills gained to promote and develop audiological services in their home countries. Graduates will also acquire many transferable skills, for example, excellent communication skills, the ability to work under pressure, the ability to work independently and in teams, and excellent interpersonal and research skills.

Who can apply?

This MSc is suitable for students with a first degree in a relevant subject (e.g. biomedical science, physics, engineering, speech and language therapy, psychology, allied healthcare professions). It is particularly suitable for those who are new to audiology.
