Entry requirements

A minimum of a second-class Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard is the standard entry requirement.

The Ear Institute recognises that some audiology professionals may have had different (non-degree) entries into the profession. Applicants with the BAAT qualification and/or a Certificate or Diploma in Hearing Therapy who also have at least five years of relevant clinical experience and appropriate registration with the RCCP may be accepted, depending on their relevant experience, and are encouraged to contact the Ear Institute to discuss their application.

The English language level for this programme is: Level 1

UCL Pre-Master's and Pre-sessional English courses are for international students who are aiming to study for a postgraduate degree at UCL. The courses will develop your academic English and academic skills required to succeed at postgraduate level.

About this degree


A wide range of optional modules enables you to focus on specific advanced fields of audiology relevant to your professional practice. You will learn about the latest research in each field and how to apply this to patient care and service delivery. You will gain proficiency in using new tools and techniques in line with advanced-level practice. 

Who this course is for

The Advanced Audiology MSc has been designed for practising clinicians/hearing aid dispensers who are interested in taking their professional practice to a more advanced level. The programme is ideally suited to practising audiologists, but professionals from related disciplines may also be considered.

What this course will give you

The UCL Ear Institute is the largest multidisciplinary centre for research into hearing and deafness in Europe. We bring together some of the most influential academics and clinicians in the world and are part of the UCL Faculty of Brain Sciences. The associated Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals houses the largest clinical audiology unit in the country. 

The MSc programme is designed for qualified audiologists. A significant number of the optional modules are taught as Masterclasses (two- to five-day short courses) followed by tutorials and assessments. This allows students who continue to work during their studies significant flexibility in how they structure their MSc programme. 

The programme has close links with healthcare providers and industry. Modules delivered as Masterclasses provide excellent networking opportunities with these companies and international healthcare professionals.

The foundation of your career

The MSc pushes the boundaries in helping clinicians develop their skills and services and innovate and design solutions to today's hearing healthcare challenges. 

100% of graduates were in highly-skilled work 15 months after completing their programme (based on the most recent Graduate Outcomes survey 2021-22). 

UK students obtain the knowledge and skills for senior roles in the NHS, as defined by the Knowledge and Skills Framework and National Occupational Standards. 

Advanced Audiology MSc not only advanced knowledge in Audiology and hearing sciences, but in wider scientific fields and healthcare landscapes. Specifically around how digital technology and data can be used to improve health outcomes for patients. The degree course has developed my critical appraisal and analytical thinking skills which I apply daily in my current role.

Employability

The programme provides audiologists with the required depth, breadth and up-to-date knowledge and competence to enable them to fulfil the needs of the higher practitioner roles. 

The UCL Ear Institute's links with industry and healthcare providers allows students significant networking opportunities. 

Networking

Throughout their time at the Ear Institute, students will have opportunities to develop new connections with staff and peers to expand their academic and professional networks through our interactive and participative programme. 

Students will learn from each other, from academic staff and practicing professionals, and will benefit from the Institute’s engagement with external groups including health trusts, charities, public and privates sector institutions. 

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through in-person lectures, tutorials, practical demonstrations and workshops, online tutorials and assignments. Research skills will be obtained through lectures and the completion of a scientific research project and poster presentation.

Assessments include essays, reflective journals, case studies, presentations, unseen examinations and the research dissertation.

Each 15-credit module will involve 150 learning hours and will typically involve two hours of contact each week, with 7- 10 hours of self-directed study or group work per week, although this varies between modules. Many of our optional modules run as masterclasses with intensive 2-5 full days in person as well as self directed pre and post learning. For MSc students, the dissertation is worth 60 credits and represents approximately 600 learning hours, including supervision, collecting data and independent study.

A Postgraduate Diploma, three core modules (45 credits), five optional modules (75 credits), full-time nine months is offered. A Postgraduate Certificate, four optional modules (60 credits), part-time up to two years is offered.

Modules

MSc students undertake eight modules to the value of 120 credits, plus a dissertation to the value of 60 credits. (180 credits in total). Students taking the PGDip in Advanced Audiology undertake eight modules to the value of 120 credits (excluding a research project). PGCert students undertake four modules to the value of 60 credits (excluding a research project).  

All modules must be completed within 24 months from the date of enrolment. Any resit assessments required for taught modules will be completed during the Late Summer Assessment (LSA) period. Students enrolled on the MSc programme will undertake the research project either across the two years of study, or in their second year. 

Students may study on a modular/flexible basis. Modular/flexible students must complete all the assessments for their programme of study within five years of the date of first enrolling (this includes the Research Project for students taking the MSc) but may choose to complete the programme in less time. This mode of study is aimed at students who intend to follow the programme while continuing to work on either a full-time or part-time basis.

MSc students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded an MSc in Advanced Audiology. Upon successful completion of 120 credits, you will be awarded a PG Dip in Advanced Audiology. Upon successful completion of 60 credits, you will be awarded a PG Cert in Advanced Audiology.

The tuition fees shown are for the year indicated above. Fees for subsequent years may increase or otherwise vary. Where the programme is offered on a flexible/modular basis, fees are charged pro-rata to the appropriate full-time Master's fee taken in an academic session. Additional costs

For Full-time and Part-time offer holders a fee deposit will be charged at 10% of the first year fee.

For flexible/modular offer holders a £500 fee deposit will be charged.

There is no fee deposit required for PG Dip and PG Cert applicants.

If you choose to undertake a research project which involves a clinical placement, you will be required to have completed Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) as well as an Occupational Health Screening (OH). 

You will receive more information from UCL on how to complete the DBS and OH checks if it is required to support your chosen research project. 

For the DBS check a charge for Post Office ID verification (£15.00) needed for an application to the Disclosure and Barring Service is payable by the student. The cost of the DBS check itself is paid for by UCL. If you have lived, worked, studied or travelled in any single country outside of the UK for six continuous months or more, in the last five years, you will be required to obtain a Certificate of Good Conduct/Police Check from the relevant country/countries. The cost of this check varies by country and is payable by the student. More information on how to obtain these can be found on gov.uk

For the OH check, the screening cost is met by UCL but the cost of necessary vaccinations is met by students (TB immunity; hepatitis B; measles, mumps, rubella; chickenpox - cost is dependent on current levels of immunity - up to £700 for all vaccinations at time of writing).

​​​​​There may be travel costs (or accommodation costs if daily travel is not possible) related to a clinical placement for your research project, which may be above the usual cost of travel to UCL. Transport costs depend on current home and allocated placement locations and student discounts may reduce these transport costs. This programme requires a completed DBS check for some compulsory modules. You will receive more information from UCL on how to complete the check once you have firmly accepted an unconditional offer for the programme.
