Surgery and Interventional Science MPhil/PhD
The Division of Surgery & Interventional Science provides a unique environment where surgeons, engineers, biomaterial specialists and basic scientists from a wide range of backgrounds come together to carry out world-leading research in areas aligned to surgery, interventional sciences and regenerative medicine.

MPhil/PhD are required to have an upper second-class UK Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering/science subject or a medical degree (MBBS), or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.

The Division of Surgery & Interventional Science has three research departments:
Materials and Tissue - has a long tradition in the development and evaluation of new materials in first-in-man studies
Nanotechnology - the application of the modern principles of nanotechnology to surgery and regenerative medicine
Tissue and Energy - the development of highly targeted, sensing and energy based surgical interventions to diagnose and cure disease
- Nanotechnology and regenerative medicine: targeted cell delivery; cell-material interactions; tissue engineering; nanomedicine; biomaterials; biosensors; nanoscale surface structuring
- Orthopaedics and musculoskeletal science: osteoporosis; bone tumour biology; joint replacement; tissue engineering; biomedical engineering; imaging and materials science; performance/rehabilitation; peripheral nerve and spinal injury
- Tissue engineering of musculoskeletal tissues
- Tissue engineering of tumours - tumoroids. These have been developed to tetdrug efficacy against established and novel therapeutics.
- Sports science: the extreme environment, surgical optimisation, orthopaedic outcomes, hip deformity, and human health and performance
- Surgery: cancer surgery; tissue engineering; reconstructive surgery; transplantation; vascular surgery; surgical implants
- Urology: interventional oncology; surgical and patient-related outcomes; molecular and stem cell biology; new medical device development.

Why study this degree at UCL?
The Division of Surgery & Interventional Sciences is located over three sites, each associated with NHS hospitals: UCH close to Bloomsbury campus; the Royal Free Hospital, and the Institute of Orthopaedics based at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. These close clinical links mean that research is often conducted in collaboration with clinicians. The research undertaken is therefore aligned to current unmet needs in the medical field.

The Research Excellence Framework, or REF, is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. The 2014 REF was carried out by the UK's higher education funding bodies, and the results used to allocate research funding from 2015/16.

"Our research group is looking at diagnosing and treating prostate cancer better. The group is composed of urology surgeons, radiologists, histopathologists, computer scientists, clinical trialists, epidemiologists, health economists and patients. This wide-ranging skill set means we can approach the problem from all angles and deliver research which is relevant to the NHS and the patients being looked after within it. Our research has already changed practice, in that men are now commonly offered an MRI scan before they have a prostate biopsy to diagnose prostate cancer. Our research has also led to improvements in treatment so that many more men now have access to minimally invasive therapies rather than traditional treatments which can carry lots of side-effects. I am able to work at the interface between looking after patients with traditional methods whilst at the same time push the envelope towards newer methods which I then use in clinic myself. There is no better feeling."
