Master's programmes (except MRes), Postgraduate Diplomas and Postgraduate Certificates

A first or second-class Bachelor’s degree from a UK university in an appropriate subject, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard from a recognised higher education institution. A small number of programmes require the GMAT or GRE General Test.

For some taught programmes, applicants whose qualifications are of a lower standard may be admitted if they can demonstrate an appropriate academic background and experience in the relevant field. Applicants may be required to pass a qualifying examination, or pass a qualifying year of a Graduate Diploma, before being registered in to the corresponding Master’s programme. 

MRes programmes

A first or upper second-class Bachelor’s degree from a UK university in an appropriate subject, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard from a recognised higher education institution.

Graduate Diplomas/Graduate Certificates

MPhil/MPhilStud/PhD/EngD programmes

Entry requirements vary between academic departments and research centres. However, research applicants will normally be required to hold a first or upper-second class Bachelor’s degree from a UK university in an appropriate subject, or a recognised taught Master’s degree. Overseas qualifications of an equivalent standard from a recognised higher education institution are also accepted.

MD(Res) programmes

Applicants should hold a registered primary qualification in Medicine (e.g. MBBS), and be eligible for full registration or hold limited registration with the General Medical Council (GMC). Applicants are normally hospital clinicians undertaking research associated with their employment.

Other applicants wishing to pursue clinical research should apply for MPhil/PhD admission.

Professional Doctorates

A Bachelor's degree from a UK university in an appropriate subject (obtained after a programme of study extending over not less than three years), awarded with upper second-class Honours or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.

• Educational and Child Psychotherapy (DEdPsy)
• Paediatric Dentistry (DDent)
• Trauma and Orthopaedics (Doc Orth)

English Language requirements

All students whose first language is not English must provide recent evidence that their spoken and written English is adequate for the programme for which they have applied.

Visas

Applicants who require a visa to study in the UK are advised to check, prior to applying, that their chosen mode of attendance is permitted.

Please note that students can’t be registered for a programme at UCL at the same time as being registered (or re-sitting examinations) for another programme at UCL or any other Higher Education Institution.
