Pioneers in Higher Education

In 1826, a university education was limited to the very few. You had to be male, a member of the established church, and independently wealthy. UCL’s founders wanted to do things differently. Inspired by the ideas of philosopher Jeremy Bentham, we were the first English university to champion inclusivity, diversity and open mindedness – accepting students based on academic ability rather than background. Allowing everyone the opportunity to go to university.
