75th Anniversary Events

The Avebury to Norwich 'Thunder Run' 4th - 5th September 2010

This tour will commemorate the 'great coup d'etat' of 1935 led by Grahame Clark, Christopher Hawkes, Charles Phillips and others, that transformed the Prehistoric Society of East Anglia into the Prehistoric Society. Stuart Piggott famously said of reaching the critical meeting in Norwich, 'I drove from Avebury (rather fast, in Keiller's MG Midget) to cast my vote in favour'. Travelling rather more sedately and staying overnight in Cambridge, this event will retrace Piggott's journey and stop off at selected prehistoric sites en route to reflect on 75 years of prehistoric research.

'The Sara Champion Debate' 20th October 2010, 6pm

'This House believes that the study of the Stone Ages has contributed more to our knowledge of the human condition than study of the Metal Ages' with Professor Clive Gamble and Professor Tim Champion

In place of the Sara Champion Memorial Lecture, we are celebrating the Society’s 75th anniversary with a special event starring Professors Clive Gamble (Royal Holloway, University of London) and Tim Champion (University of Southampton). Our distinguished speakers will debate, in a not wholly serious fashion, the relative merits of the Stone Ages versus the Metal Ages, while the President of the Society attempts to keep order and the audience decides the winner. Will you gamble on Clive or is Tim your champion…?

Research Strategy for Prehistory

English Heritage is inviting comments on its draft Thematic Research Strategy for Prehistory. The draft strategy sets out current thinking on the priorities for English Heritage relating to prehistory and is intended to direct the allocation of resources towards research which contributes significantly to EH's mission to protect the historic environment.

The strategy will be revised in the light of comments received during the consultation period and aligned with the developing National Heritage Protection Plan, which will form a major part of the corporate strategy for the period 2010-2015. The draft strategy can be viewed here: http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/professional/research/strategies/research -strategies/

All comments are very welcome and should be sent to jonathan.last@english-heritage.org.uk by 30th September 2010.
