General Information

All grants and awards are open only to members of the Prehistoric Society. Details of membership can be found on the membership page. The exception is the Conference Fund, which is open to members and non-members alike. If you are not a member, please enclose your membership application and payment with your grant application.

The deadline for receipt of all applications and references is 31st January of each year. N.B. Late, incomplete or applications received without references will not be considered.

All grants are awarded at the annual Awards Committee meeting in February. The Awards Committee comprises the President, Secretary and Vice Presidents. Successful applicants will be notified by the middle of March. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified by email.

A condition of grant acceptance is that all recipients must complete a short report (500-800 words, with 1-2 images) suitable for publication in our newsletter PAST. Please see PAST online for suitable content, style, etc. This report should be received by the Society within two months of the completion of the project for which the grant was received. All successful applicants will be contacted to confirm the status of this report. Recipients who fail to provide such a report will be barred from future grant applications.

Paper copies of all grant application forms may be received by writing to the Administrative Assistant at:

1) Research Fund
Grants from this fund are to assist research into prehistory in any part of the world. In conjunction with the general fund, the Prehistoric Society administers the Bob Smith Fund (established by Dr. G Wainwright to commemorate the late Dr. R W Smith) and the Leslie Grinsell Award. Both the above named awards are selected from applications to the general fund and are offered to projects closest to the research interests of Bob Smith and Leslie Grinsell.

2) Conference Fund
The Conference Fund of the Society was established in 1986 and is open to all prehistorians. Its aim is to further the development of prehistory as an international discipline. At present, two scholarships per annum are available and are usually in the range of £200-£300 each. The fund is intended to offer funding to those who might not otherwise be able to travel to an international conference. Particular emphasis is placed on scholars from developing countries.
