Professor David Williams leads the obstetric medicine research group.
Professor Williams is also an obstetric physician who leads the North Central London (NCL) maternal medicine network providing clinical care for 27,000 maternities per year. Based at the EGA Institute for Women’s Health, University College London Hospital his team aims to improve pregnancy outcomes for women with medical disorders in pregnancy. The obstetric medicine research group has 3 major aims.
- To understand the cause and best management of gestational syndromes: We are specifically investigating pre-eclampsia, acute fatty liver of pregnancy and hyperemesis gravidarum. Our goal is to understand the pathophysiology of these multi-system disorders in order to provide best management to improve pregnancy outcomes for mother and infant. We quantify the risk of future life disease following gestational syndromes.
- To understand the cause of placental inflammatory syndromes and prevent their recurrence in future pregnancies: We are investigating the cause of 3 rare but related inflammatory syndromes of pregnancy; Chronic Histiocytic Intervillositis (CHI), Villitis of Unknown Etiology (VUE) and Massive Peri-villous Fibrin Deposition (MPFD). These placental syndromes are associated with recurrent pregnancy losses.
- To investigate intergenerational inheritance of acquired traits: We are specifically trying to identify the epigenetic marks associated with obesity and whether these can be inherited from father to offspring.
