The UK Collaborative HIV Cohort (UK CHIC) Study

Project Summary

The collaboration started in 2001 with the aim of bringing together data relating to clinical care and treatment of HIV.

The study database contains routinely collected clinical information on people with HIV aged over 16 years who have attended one of the collaborating centres for care at any time in 1996 or thereafter.

When the study ended in 2021, the database contained information on more than 50,000 people with HIV who had attended for care at one of a number of HIV clinics around the UK.

Although the primary purpose of the study was to monitor the uptake and response to therapy among individuals with HIV in the UK, other research themes included: HIV and pregnancy; HIV and hepatitis co-infection; and HIV and ageing.

The study design was based on annual data collection, data cleaning and data merging processes, leading to the preparation of an annual anonymised dataset which was used for data analyses.
