This 3-year PhD Studentship in paediatric clinical neuroscience, funded by Epilepsy Research Institute, is available within the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health starting 1st October 2026.
Background
The project is an International Neuropsychological Follow-up Study of Children with New-onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE).
NORSE/FIRES is a severe neurological condition affecting previously typically developing, healthy individuals. Although much research focus has been on the acute phase of the disease, predicting neuropsychological outcomes in long-term survivors remains an unmet clinical need.
Hypothesis/Aims
We aim to establish if acute and chronic disease biomarkers, e.g. cytokine profile, clinical evolution, medication and immunomodulation received, structural brain MRI and EEG findings, may help predict long-term neuropsychological outcomes.
Outputs
We aim to identify acute and chronic clinical biomarkers and explore their predictive value for long-term clinical, cognitive and quality of life outcomes in this condition. We will support the development of tools for early risk stratification and intervention planning.
About you
The ideal candidate has a background (MSc) in neuropsychology, cognitive neuroscience, medicine or clinical neuroscience. A high level of interpersonal skills will be essential and some experience in working with children or adolescents would be helpful, as the project involves recruiting and assessing patients of different levels of ability. An interest in developing programming and statistical/analytical skills will be required as the project involves developing biomarkers based on EEG and MRI.
Applicants must meet the UCL Child Health MPhil/PhD entry requirements, including English language requirements where applicable.
What we offer
This studentship provides a starting stipend of £23,805 per annum and also covers the cost of tuition fees based on the UK (Home) rate.
Non-UK students can apply but if they are not eligible for UK/Home fees status, they will have to personally fund the difference between the UK (Home) rate and the Overseas rate.
Funding is not provided for paid parental and medical leave. Unpaid interruptions can be requested and may be supported.
