Every year, new students are invited to complete the New to UCL survey — a quick way to have their say on the welcome experience, with the chance to win cash prizes ranging from £25 to £500.
The survey opens in the first term for new students at all levels of study. Feedback from the survey, including comments and results, is vital for helping departments and support services improve the welcome experience for future students.
For example, feedback from past surveys has led to major improvements in welcome activities, including clearer guidance from the outset, a comprehensive guide for all students, more opportunities to meet course mates through the Transition Mentor Programme, and early UCL ID card collection to avoid queues.
We recently spoke with the latest £500 jackpot prize winner, an MSc student in Reproductive Science and Women’s Health, who shared their experience of joining UCL and highlighted the opportunity to provide feedback to help improve the experience for future new students.
How has your experience been of studying at UCL so far?
My experience at UCL has been really positive, and honestly, it’s meant a lot to feel at home so quickly. Being on a one-year master’s program, everything moves fast, so settling in and feeling supported from the start is crucial. The campus community, the staff, and the resources have made it much easier to find my footing and really focus on my studies, while still feeling part of something bigger.
How do you feel about giving feedback at UCL?
I think the student voice is so important at UCL. Giving feedback feels meaningful because the university genuinely listens. It’s reassuring to know that your opinions aren’t just noted, they can actually shape the experience for current and future students. It’s clear that the university and lecturers put a lot of effort into the student experience, so it helps them to know what’s working and what needs improvement.
Do you have any advice for future students about why they should complete the New to UCL survey?
I’d definitely encourage future students to take a few minutes to complete the New to UCL survey. Sharing your experience is a chance to help improve the experience for newcomers and make the university feel even more welcoming. It’s also a reminder that your perspective matters!
