What were you doing before joining the Humanitarian Policy and Practice MSc?
I worked in the British Red Cross organisation in the UK and remotely managed healthcare programs in my home country, Myanmar, for the humanitarian organisation I founded in 2013 called the Myanmar Medical Online Campus (MMOC). MMOC supports continuing professional education in Myanmar and, in parallel, runs several emergency healthcare programs and projects in response to the country’s needs.
Why did you choose to study this course?
As a humanitarian worker, I am highly interested in studying the humanities and wish to apply this knowledge to enhance current humanitarian programmes for better outcomes.
What have you enjoyed most about the course so far?
I enjoy learning about humanitarian policies, principles, and related areas like disaster response and emergency planning. Among these, I would like to focus on Humanitarian Technologies for my thesis, as AI and other advanced technologies are increasingly being integrated into current practices.
How do you feel the course is supporting your academic and personal development?
Programme Lecturers are doing their utmost to share both principles and practices simultaneously by inviting real-world practitioners to our classes. I have also been able to apply learnings from my classes, peers, and lecturers to the management and operation of the organisation I founded in 2013, Myanmar Medical Online Campus.
Where do you hope your Master’s degree will take you?
Receiving a Master’s degree is a significant milestone in everyone’s professional life. Earning this qualification can unlock opportunities for further education or a career as a specialist in the field.
How has it been living and studying in London?
There are many world-class universities and several organisations’ headquarters or main branches in London. This is a great advantage for London-based students, as we can attend interesting seminars or events from other universities and join external events. It can help with both professional and career opportunities.
Do you have a piece of advice to share with future students of the course?
UCL is not only excellent at providing education but also leads in student support services. I received an outstanding welcome, ongoing support, and well-being services throughout my studies. Furthermore, many UCL alumni have established various careers, offering great opportunities to connect with them.
Where is home for you?
For the humanitarian and displaced scholar, home is where one can fully utilise their abilities to serve their community.
