Student Spotlight: Marwa, Master of Public Health MPH (online)
21 March 2025
Meet Marwa, a student on the online Master of Public Health MPH at UCL. Marwa shares how the IMPACT scholarship has transformed her student experience, the benefits of online study, and her future plans.

What motivated you to study public health?
My interest in public health began at an early age as I navigated the healthcare system as a refugee with elderly caregivers. However, my passion intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Beirut port explosion, which exposed the fragility of the health system. These events were a turning point for me, solidifying my commitment to improving the well-being of vulnerable communities and addressing systemic inequalities in healthcare.
How has the IMPACT scholarship supported your studies?
The IMPACT scholarship has opened my eyes to the multitude of opportunities within the public health sphere. Learning alongside peers from around the world and diverse backgrounds has shown me the richness of this field, where every individual can contribute as a valuable team player. Beyond providing the means to pursue higher education, the scholarship has given me a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect with tomorrow’s leaders and changemakers.
Why choose online study for a public health degree?
The flexibility of the online MPH has allowed me to continue my career as a project coordinator in Lebanon while applying the knowledge I gain directly to my work. I was able to work in emergency response in Lebanon while continuing my education. This has been immensely beneficial, as it enables me to share, implement, and refine my learning in real time, creating a meaningful impact in my field.
What are your plans after graduation?
I aim to continue working in the non-governmental sector, focusing on enhancing the resilience of vulnerable communities. Specifically, I hope to dedicate more of my efforts to health promotion activities, ensuring that the groundwork is laid to reduce inequalities and improve access to healthcare for all.
Do you have any advice for future students?
Engage fully with the journey – this is a great opportunity to connect with people and professionals from diverse backgrounds. Embrace every opportunity to learn, collaborate, and grow, as these experiences will shape, not only your career but also, your perspective on the world.
Where is home for you?
As a refugee, home is a fluid concept for me. It is not tied to where I can find myself alongside my community. Home is where I can be the best version of myself, and the best version of myself is where I have the means to support and uplift my people.
