Dr Susanne Gaube, Lecturer in Human Factors for Healthcare at Business School for Health (GBSH), and colleagues from the University of Toronto (Zahra Shakeri, Jeremy Petch, PhD, Ervin Sejdic and Errol Colak) and the Technical University of Darmstadt (Ekaterina Jussupow) have secured funding from the University of Toronto and UCL Global Engagement to establish a transatlantic research network focused on the safe, equitable, and human-centred deployment of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
As AI systems rapidly enter global healthcare settings, the need for equitable, safe, and inclusive deployment is urgent. This project tackles pressing issues such as algorithmic bias, under reliance, and decision-support safety through collaborative research and real-world stakeholder engagement across the UK, Canada, and Germany.
The project which began in July 2025 and will end in July 2026 aims to develop a sustainable, international research consortium dedicated to understanding and promoting the responsible, human-centred integration of AI technologies in health systems. The project will examine human, organisational, and technical factors contributing to AI incidents and co-design solutions with key stakeholders to improve trust, safety, and effectiveness in AI-enabled healthcare.
This is aligned with UCL’s strategic priority to deliver ethical and impact-oriented digital innovation and supports GBSH’s commitment to improving health outcomes through interdisciplinary research. It also extends Dr Gaube’s research on human-AI collaboration and healthcare safety and strengthens UCL’s positioning in Horizon Europe partnerships.
This collaboration strengthens UCL’s leadership in responsible health AI research and creates vital opportunities to shape global best practices for the safe and equitable use of AI in clinical care.
