In this Master Class Professor Ruth King discussed the issue of making proactive “informed decisions” within an academic career (and possibly outside lives more generally!). She presented her own personal view of dealing with invitations and/or requests received from a variety of different sources (some may be in disguise!). There may be many factors to consider when deciding what, and how, to respond to such requests or invitations (and dependent on who is asking and what the decision is!). However in most situations the invitation can be viewed within a framework of “opportunities versus costs” (admittedly with quite a bit of uncertainty often attached). In her personal experience, responding “yes” often leads to significantly more regret than saying “no”.
