Making a difference: How research can have real-world impact

Translation of research into practice is highly challenging. The majority of research fails to impact on routine clinical practice and any impact is typically many years after the research has been conducted. COVID-19 has resulted in a global major transformation in working practices, including for research. The aim of this symposium is to highlight the potential of research to have real and rapid impacts. Professor Neil Sebire will discuss the application of health data science and the process from analytics to clinical decision support. Professor Monica Lakhanpaul will present two studies from different settings but with common problems. The first, the ‘Champions’ project, focuses on children experiencing homelessness and the second is the India Panchseel Project that uses art to help children understand the situation about Covid-19 regarding nutrition in tribal villages. In the final presentation, Professor Russell Viner will use his research studies on COVID-19 and on obesity to illustrate using science to influence policy.
