2021 UCL Institute of Health Informatics Summer Work Experience for A Level students

Health data is increasing in size and complexity and the UK has some of the richest data in the world. At IHI, we specialise in using electronic health record data that are collected during people’s interactions with their GP or hospital doctor to develop a better understanding of diseases and improve the health of patients. Over the course of 3 days, you will have the unique opportunity to hear from researchers, health data scientists, clinicians and public health experts to learn about health informatics and the use of electronic health data for medical research. On days 1 and 2, you will be taken through the key concepts, opportunities and challenges in using health data for research, and how use of data has contributed to the effort to combat COVID-19 through a combination of talks and fun interactive workshops. On the final day, you will discuss how artificial intelligence algorithms can propagate bias, and hear from experts in leadership and mentorship and learn about the different careers and pathways in health informatics/data science during an interactive “day in the life of” session.

Draft programme

Day 1 (5th July)

• Understanding the big issues in using health data for research
• An introduction to administrative data research and record linkage to better understand how education affects children’s health, and how health affects children’s education
• Health inequalities and using data to better understand the COVID-19 pandemic

Day 2 (6th July)

• Using free text, mobile and wearables data for health research
• Understanding health and risk of disease: the Human Phenome Prognostic Atlas of Disease
• Management of a COVID-19 outbreak scenario in a care home

Day 3 (7th July)

• A look at how algorithms can encode and propagate bias
• Leadership and development in science
• Three inspirational researchers will tell their stories, followed by a Q&A session
• Learn about the different careers and pathways in health data science and which skills you should look to develop
