Understanding the social determinants of place of death in older adults

National death registry data indicates that there are social inequalities according to place of death; people from more deprived areas are more likely to die in hospital and less likely to die at home than those living in less deprived areas. The ONS LS offers the potential to understand the reasons why this inequality exists but so far has been underutilised by end of life care researchers. This research project will analyse the relationship between social factors collected in the Census and place of death, in order to inform actions to reduce unnecessary hospital deaths and limit social inequalities in end of life care.
