Children whose parents separate tend to attain a lower level of education than those whose parents remain together. It has been suggested that increasing separation among lower-educated parents, coupled with the educational disadvantage this may bring, is a mechanism generating educational inequality. We wish to test this hypothesis to better understand the roots of inequality of educational opportunity, and strengthen the evidence base for policy.
