Coaching and Mentoring
Our goal is to increase access to mentoring and coaching for IGH staff. Our focus is broadly centred on career development, and we aim to build capacity and support within IGH.
What is mentoring and coaching?
Mentoring is a relationship between two parties, who are not connected within a line management structure. Typically, the mentor guides the mentee through a period of change and towards an agreed objective, or assists them to become acquainted with a new situation. At IGH, we have various mentoring opportunities (see below), some more formal than others.
Mentoring and coaching have some key differences:
- Coaching is task oriented. The focus is on concrete issues, such as managing time more effectively, speaking more articulately, and learning how to think strategically.
- Mentoring is relationship oriented. It seeks to provide a safe environment where the mentee shares whatever issues affect his or her professional and personal success. Although specific learning goals or competencies may be used as a basis for creating the relationship, its focus goes beyond these areas to include things, such as work/life balance, self-confidence, self-perception.
- Coaching is short term. A coach can successfully be involved with a coachee for a short period of time, maybe even just one or two sessions.
- Mentoring is usually longer term. Mentoring, to be successful, requires time in which both partners can learn about one another and build a climate of trust.
- Coaching is performance driven. The purpose of coaching is to improve the individual's performance on the job
- Mentoring is development driven. Its purpose is to develop the individual not only for the current job, but also for the future.
Career Surgeries

Faculty of Population Health Sciences Mentor Scheme
FPHS offers a cross-institute mentoring scheme.
The scheme aims to:
Promote awareness of mentorship and its benefits for mentors and mentees Develop and provide training where needed Help to establish and maintain positive mentorship relationships
To take part in this scheme you will need to attend a training session or complete the online training on Moodle. This training outlines the benefits of mentoring and how to become a mentee and/or mentor on the scheme with some guidance for fruitful mentoring relationships. Would be mentors are also required to familiarise themselves with UCL's Let's Talk About Race and Racism Toolkit.
ICH Online Mentoring Training
Complete ICH Online Mentoring Training. Please contact laura.brown@ucl.ac.uk or l.rangaka@ucl.ac.uk for the course enrollment key.
You will then have the option to find a mentor yourself through the FPHS Mentoring Moodle Platform, or be matched directly to a mentor.

IGH ECR Peer Coaching
As part of the IGH ECR Peer Group, we have set up an ECR peer coaching scheme where ECRs (self-defined) support one another through work-related challenges using the GROW model which focuses on Goals, Realities, Options and Way forward. B-MEntor Scheme
B-MEntor Academic and Professional are two well-established mentoring programmes that offer a unique platform for BAME academic, research and professional services staff to strengthen their skills and improve their networking capability through cultivating cross-institutional relationships.

Digital Skills Team – Weekly Drop in Sessions (Term time)
Remotely via Moodle using Microsoft Teams or in person support on campus in Room 501 (5th Floor), Institute of Archaeology. You have the choice to either join the session remotely or in person on the same date and time. This Public Policy Engagement: Online Series is the central point of your Connected Learning experience designed by UCL Public Policy. Containing short videos, interactive activities, reflection exercises and resources, these free modules are designed for early career researchers to build their skills in academic policy engagement, but are also open to people within and beyond UCL, at all career stages to participate in.
Developing Grants and Fellowships SharePoint
UCL’s three Research Coordination and Facilitation Teams have joined forces with Organisational Development to develop a combined website providing resources and guidance to help researchers navigate some of the complexities of applying for, and securing, research funding. Inside you will find bitesize videos, interviews, documents and useful links designed to support you while putting together research proposals and progressing your careers as researchers at UCL and beyond. The resources on this site will provide you with a good starting point. However given the variety of award types and funders, we encourage you to contact the Research Facilitation and Coordination Team directly for more comprehensive and tailored support with your application.
