CHLD0086 Rehabilitation and Management for People Living with long-term neurological Conditions

Summary

This module is designed for physiotherapists who wish to advance their neurophysiotherapy practice by exploring the best practice/guideline recommendations for the assessment, treatment/ management and service provision, primarily of physical functioning, of a range of different long-term neurological conditions (LTnC). The module will focus on a range of pathologies such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s/atypical Parkinson’s, spinal cord injury, neuro-oncology and Motor Neurone Disease, looking in detail at the evidence underpinning recommendations made for assessment, treatment and management. This module would be suitable for clinical therapists who work with those living with these types of complex long-term neurological conditions. You will be encouraged to reflect critically on your own scope of practice and will be expected to actively participate in discussions, debate and workshop.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

At the end of the module and associated independent study, the successful student will be able to:

1. Critically discuss evidence based assessment, treatment and management plans, drawing upon relevant guidelines/best practice recommendations, for a range of selected long-term neurological conditions. 
2. Critically discuss and justify options for service provision at different stages of the patient pathway for a range of selected long-term neurological conditions.
3. Critically discuss commonalities and differences in options for assessment, treatment, management and service provision across the range of long-term neurological conditions.

Who is this module for?

You will need to be a qualified physiotherapist, with a degree in physiotherapy at least equivalent to a lower second class Bachelor’s degree.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The module will be delivered via a combination of face-to-face lectures, workshops and seminars. Teaching will be facilitated by relevant experts in their field. Moodle, the UCL virtual learning platform will be used to facilitate communication both between tutors and students, and between the students themselves, and also to provide learning resources and feedback. Lecture capture technology will be used throughout the module for recording of lectures, so that you can refer back to them during revision periods.

Assessment 

You will be assessed by a written report of 3,000 words.
