Membership

All GOSH staff can join the the Library but they do need to register.

Membership registration is online or in person in the library. Please see the University College London Library Services webpages for information on NHS membership.

Physical Library Services and Library Space

The Library is open Monday to Friday 9:00am-6:00pm.

Out of Hours Access

GOSH staff are granted out of hours access to the library when it is unstaffed at the following times:

Monday-Friday: 6:00 pm to 10:45 pm Saturday and Sunday: 9:00 am to 9:00 pm

To request out of hours access, please do so when joining the library, you will need to visit and one member of library staff will give you a fire evacuation tour of the library and you will need to sign a local induction and familiarisation form. If you are already a library member please email ich.library@ucl.ac.uk and we will arranage a time for you to come in and have the fire tour.

We provide 7 GOSH networked computers in the library, giving access to the GOSH staff terminal. There are five computers which GOSH members of the library can use to access the ejournals and databases which UCL subscribes to. There is also a bookable training room with 8 computers with audio-visual facilities which can be booked in advance for private study or meetings. The library assists those with their own laptop or other portable electronic device and require help with connecting to the GOSH staff terminal

Free UCL Wi-Fi access is given to all GOSH staff.

As well as using the UCL GOS ICH library, GOSH staff can access all 18 UCL libraries, 8 of which are specialist biomedical libraries.

GOSH staff have access to a wide range of electronic resources

GOSH staff can have an NHS OpenAthens password, which the Library administers. The NHS password provides access to all the NHS resources ( e-journals and databases, ebooks) from anywhere with an Internet connection.

A significant number of resources are licensed through UCL Library Services that are accessible, using a personal NHS Athens account, directly from a workplace or home computer.

These currently include resources such as BMJ Case Reports, Clinical Evidence, Best Health, Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin and many others.

The library has expanded its collection of electronic books specifically for GOSH staff, 4,000 new e-books have recently been purchased giving GOSH staff remote online access to a wide range of downloadable books via EBSCO host through their NHS Athens account.

Requests from UCL’s e-journals and e-books

NHS library members can request an electronic copy of journal articles and book chapters.

Endnote License

The Library pays for the EndNote license to be available to all GOSH staff. EndNote is a commercial reference management software package, used to manage bibliographies and references when writing articles, essays, systematic reviews and so on. Upon request library staff provide a code to GOSH staff so that the latest version of EndNote software can be downloaded to their home PC, or work computer.

Sessions for GOSH staff

The session Finding and accessing journal articles: a practical guide for GOSH staff runs regularly and is open to GOSH staff only.

All other training sessions run by UCL Library Services are open to GOSH staff. Session topics include literature searching, systematic reviews, referencing and referencing software such as EndNote.

Honorary Contracts

GOSH staff with a UCL Honorary Contract are eligible to access the full range of University College London’s electronic library resources, including electronic journals, both on and off-site. Information about how to obtain an Honorary Contract is available on the SLMS website (under the heading ‘Honorary Appointments’).
