About the lecture
Working together in sympathy groups is the secret of success in all areas of human endeavour - from agriculture to child-care, science, theatre, the military, business and sport. The 'sympathy group' is the smallest social group outside the family, 15 or so people who solve problems through conversation and shared strategies.
For twenty years Professor Costello led large scale studies of women groups in Asia and Africa. They dramatically cut maternal and newborn deaths even where health services were rudimentary. In this lecture, he outlines population approaches to improve global women's and children's health. Learning from these experiments to build social trust, he analyses why and how successful organisations keep promises and build social capital. He will present ideas for a new science of sympathy group solutions to address 'wicked' problems in policy and practice. Please book your ticket in advance of the event.
