About the course

This course explores contemporary theories and models of leadership. Students will learn and analyse various perspectives, assumptions, strengths, and weaknesses of leadership theories. You will research the connection between theory and practice in actual leadership settings. You will also engage in the analysis of cases portraying leaders who exemplify or challenge established leadership theories. Through case studies, class discussions, and written assignments students will explore the relevance of leadership theories to their future role as leaders.

The aims of this course are:

  • to introduce you to the literature on leadership;
  • to understand the challenges of bridging theory and practice;
  • to develop critical views of political and organisational leadership from the theories, cases and evidence-bases considered;
  • to formulate considered views in a final research paper;
  • to develop key skills associated with: reading about, understanding and discussing conceptual issues and theoretical debates; applying concepts and theories to the practical aspects of leadership; writing research papers and brief policy papers (memos) and presenting them in seminars; reflecting on peers’ feedback.

On completing the course, you will be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of, familiarity with, and critical evaluation of the most salient issues in leadership debate. You will be able to show familiarity with key theoretical approaches to leadership, and leaders’ activities and performance. Apart from personal development, this will also give you an advantage in gaining employment in public, private, and non-profit sectors that seek candidates able to contribute to the development of leadership potential in organisations.
