Angela Carballal Barca

My name is Angela Carballal and I am a third year Spanish PPE student, specialising in Philosophy and Politics on the Mixed Methods stream.

I applied to UCL because I wanted a university experience that would allow me to benefit from the combination of an excellent academic education and the dynamic, exciting and stimulating environment that London provides. Studying PPE at UCL has given me the opportunity to immerse myself in an incredibly diverse learning community, while living right in the heart of the political, economic, and social institutions of the UK.

The most enjoyable part about the PPE programme is how truly engaging and interdisciplinary the syllabus is. The course is designed in a way that ensures that the skills and information we learn in one module can be applied to all our other subjects, and are also transferrable to the current political events. Getting to meet charismatic, insightful and highly driven people from all over the world who share an interest in having a meaningful impact in our society has been one of the most satisfying things about the course.

I would highly recommend PPE to anyone who is genuinely curious and passionate about understanding the world around us and who is eager to learn the skills necessary to design new ways to change it. It is a challenging course, but also an immensely rewarding one. The atmosphere between course mates, teachers and staff is a warm and welcoming one, where collaborative work is highly encouraged and everyone is willing to help out in order to build each other up.

Even though the transition to online teaching was abrupt, despite its difficulties it has been a very productive experience. It not only pushed us to develop new valuable skills that will definitely be of great help in our future careers, but it has also strengthened our sense of community. It has been an opportunity to approach learning in a brand new cooperative manner and to introduce innovative ideas that will continue to contribute to maintaining the high standards of education that UCL offers.

UCL also has plenty of support services that ensure that life as a student in London is as enjoyable and stress-free as possible. There are hundreds of great societies one can get involved with, and we have access to so many modern, highly equipped facilities where you can spend the day studying, meeting new people and making friends. London is also full of interesting activities and new places to discover, as well as offering a great number of professional and personal opportunities to grow.

Once I complete my undergraduate, I hope to carry on with my education doing a Masters in International Affairs and Sustainable Development, with a special emphasis on Feminist Theories of development. Reading PPE at UCL has been pivotal in my decision to pursue this career path and I am very happy to have been able to be a part of this wonderful community.
