IPP Student

Tell us a bit about yourself, and your background?
I am Sowmiya Krishnan I am an international student from Canada, currently pursuing an MSc in International Public Policy at University College London (UCL). My academic journey began with a law degree (LLB Hons) from The University of Law, where I developed a strong foundation in legal principles and advocacy. Alongside my studies, I have gained experience in content creation, policy analysis, and entrepreneurship. My work as a Content Creator at The Legal Amity allowed me to engage with legal and policy issues, while founding BlueCoffeeBear, my own start-up, has strengthened my business acumen and creative marketing skills.

Why did you apply to Political Science Department, UCL?
I was drawn to UCL’s Political Science Department due to its global reputation for excellence in public policy research and its interdisciplinary approach to solving real-world challenges. Given my background in law and my interest in governance and policymaking, I saw this programme as the perfect bridge between legal frameworks and policy implementation. UCL’s emphasis on evidence-based policymaking and its diverse student body also made it the ideal environment for me to broaden my perspective and develop practical skills for a career in international policy.

What do you like best about your course so far?
So far, I have particularly enjoyed the interactive and discussion-based approach to learning. The course brings together students from diverse professional and academic backgrounds, which fosters insightful debates on contemporary global policy challenges. Additionally, the exposure to real-world case studies and practical policy analysis tools has been incredibly valuable. The faculty’s expertise and accessibility make it an intellectually stimulating environment, encouraging us to critically engage with policy issues.

What is the rest of your cohort like?
The cohort is incredibly diverse, driven, and intellectually curious. There is a strong mix of students with backgrounds in law, economics, international relations, and political science, which leads to engaging and thought-provoking discussions. Everyone brings a unique perspective, whether from previous professional experiences in government, NGOs, or private sector policy roles. It’s a great learning environment where we constantly challenge and inspire each other.

What is the teaching and learning like?
The teaching at UCL’s Political Science Department is rigorous, analytical, and application-based. The lecturers are experts in their fields, often contributing to cutting-edge research and policymaking. Learning is a blend of lectures, seminars, and practical workshops, where we apply theoretical concepts to real-world policy problems. The department also provides networking opportunities with policymakers, guest speakers, and industry professionals, which enhances our understanding of how policies are formulated and implemented.

What are your career aspirations and how do you envisage the programme helping with these?
I aspire to work in international public policy, particularly in governance, human rights, or sustainability. My background in law has given me strong analytical and advocacy skills, and this programme is helping me translate those into policy analysis, research, and implementation skills. The MSc will provide me with expertise in policy evaluation and evidence-based decision-making, which will be crucial for roles in international organizations like the UN, think tanks, or government advisory bodies. Additionally, UCL’s strong alumni network and career support will help me connect with professionals in my field of interest.

Give us your top three things to do/see/go to in London?
•    Sky Garden – A breathtaking spot offering panoramic views of London from one of the city's tallest buildings. It’s a perfect place to relax, take in the skyline, and enjoy the lush indoor gardens. Best of all, it’s free to visit with a booking!
•    London Bridge – A historic landmark that symbolizes London’s rich past and connects you to some of the city’s most iconic sights. Walking across London Bridge gives you stunning views of the Tower Bridge, the Shard, and the Thames, making it a must-visit location.
•    The British Library – An incredible place to explore rare manuscripts, historic documents, and literary treasures. It’s not just a library; it’s a cultural hub that offers exhibitions, quiet study spaces, and a unique glimpse into the world’s written heritage.

Who inspires you and why?
I am particularly inspired by Amal Clooney, an international human rights lawyer, for her relentless advocacy for justice and human rights. Her ability to blend legal expertise with policy advocacy at the international level is something I aspire to. She has successfully used her legal knowledge to influence policies and bring attention to critical global issues, such as war crimes and press freedom.

If you could implement one for policy in the world today, what would it be?
If I could implement one policy, it would be a universal climate justice framework that holds corporations and governments accountable for environmental degradation while ensuring fair compensation and sustainable development for affected communities. Climate change is a pressing global crisis, and current policies often fail to protect vulnerable populations who bear the brunt of its impact. A stronger international policy with enforceable regulations on emissions, corporate responsibility, and green innovation incentives would be essential in tackling the crisis effectively.
