Research summary

Focusing on political violence, Professor Bakke’s research explores post-war state-building and wartime governance, states’ responses to opposition movements within their borders, the dynamics of violence in self-determination struggles, and geopolitical attitudes (see her website). She draws on multiple methods in her work—large-n cross-case analyses, public opinion surveys, and fieldwork-based case studies—and collaborates with colleagues from different disciplines. She has conducted fieldwork in Northern Ireland, India, Guatemala, Canada, and several post-Soviet states and de facto states. She is the author of Decentralization and Intrastate Struggles: Chechnya, Punjab, and Québec, which was published with Cambridge University Press in 2015 and received the Conflict Research Society’s Book of the Year Award in 2016. Her work has also been published in journals such as International SecurityInternational Studies QuarterlyJournal of Conflict ResolutionJournal of Peace ResearchPerspectives on PoliticsPolitical Geography, and World Politics. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Economic and Social Research Council, and the Norwegian Research Council.

Teaching summary

In the Department of Political Science, School of Public Policy, Professor Bakke teaches the MSc course on Conflict Resolution and Post-War Developments, as well as the BSc course on International Relations Theories.

In the program on European and International Social and Political Studies, she teaches the BA course on Political Violence and Intrastate Conflicts, as well as the International Relations section of the core course Introduction to European History, Law, Politics and Philosophy.

Kristin M. Bakke is Professor in Political Science and International Relations. She teaches in UCL’s Department of Political Science, in the School of Public Policy, and in the program on European and International Social and Political Studies. She is a member of the Conflict & Change research cluster. She is also an Associate Research Professor at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).

Prior to joining UCL in 2009, Professor Bakke was an Assistant Professor in political science at Leiden University and a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard University. She holds a PhD and MA in political science from the University of Washington, Seattle, and a BA in journalism and political science from Indiana University, Bloomington. She is from Norway.

Professor Bakke is an Associate Editor at the Journal of Peace Research and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Global Security Studies and the advisory board of Nations and Nationalism. She sits on the council of the Conflict Research Society.
