Research Title

Queer Politics in the Caribbean: How Communities Form and Legislative Bodies Respond.

Research Summary

Cuba’s government is an authoritarian regime notorious for human rights violations and Grenada’s government is a democratic institution part of the British Commonwealth. Challenging preconceived notions of progress, Cuba has been rapidly expanding rights for the LGBTQ+ community and Grenada has violently resisted any change to the heterosexist norm. What has caused such variation in this region of the world? What role does colonialism and sovereignty play in social change and individual liberty? Are the reported stories of liberation or oppression representing the full scope of queer realities?
