The next US presidential election—happening roughly one year from now, on November 5, 2024—will be one of the most important elections in modern history. It is shaping up to be a rematch between Democratic incumbent Joe Biden and Republican former president Donald Trump. While a competitive primary on the Republican side of the ledger is about to begin, polls show Trump with an enormous lead over his rivals. Trump, who incited the January 6th insurrection with lies about his 2020 election defeat, remains popular within his party, despite being charged with 91 separate felony indictments and having recently been found to have committed fraud and liable for sexual assault. And yet, the polls show that Trump could win. Will he? Or will Joe Biden, who faces serious concerns over his age, manage to get re-elected? In this talk, Dr. Brian Klaas will discuss the contours of the truly bizarre 2024 race and warn that what's likely to come in the next year won't be pretty.
Dr. Brian Klaas is an associate professor of global politics at University College London and a contributing writer for The Atlantic magazine.
