Nour Halabi is a Lecturer of Media and Communication at the University of Leeds and the Vice-Chair of the MeCCSA Race Network. She is an affiliate for the Center for Media at Risk at the University of Pennsylvania. Her interdisciplinary research examines the interactions between mobility, social movements and global media. Her most recent publication is on "The Spatial Politics of the Syrian Revolution," in Middle East Critique (2019).

Her paper reflects on the devastation of the Syrian landscape during the conflict of the past eight years, as well as the “reconstruction” projects announced by the Syrian government in 2017 and 2018. Her paper examines the legal repercussions of Law No. 3 and Law No. 10 for internally displaced persons and refugees. She argues that any post-conflict reconstruction must include a reconciliation process that addresses the inequalities that plagued earlier urban development.

Niall Couper heads up the Media, PR and Supporter Communications department at Amnesty UK. He is the lead on media strategy, internal communications, our corporate partnerships and reputation issues. He represents Amnesty UK at a global level on our international communications groups.

He will talk about why the media is important, the challenges of detoxifying human rights, and how to try to make people care. In particular he is interested in how to challenge the anti-human rights narratives promoted by states.
