Chris Giles appointed Honorary Professor of Practice at UCL Policy Lab

The UCL Policy Lab is delighted to announce the appointment of Chris Giles, Economics Editor at the Financial Times, as an Honorary Professor of Practice
The UCL Policy Lab is thrilled to announce the appointment of leading journalist Chris Giles as an Honorary Professor of Practice in recognition of his exceptional contributions to economics and finance through his groundbreaking work at the Financial Times as Economics Editor.
Ahead of the announcement, Chris Giles spoke of his excitement at the appointment “I am delighted to have been made an Honorary Professor of Practice at UCL and excited about joining the wonderfully talented academics at its Policy Lab.”
Chris also spoke of the importance of discussion between academia and the wider public “As the world emerges from the Covid pandemic amid new geopolitical tensions, there has rarely been a more important time for academics from all the social sciences to work together, collaborate with those outside academia and communicate ideas for the future to make the world a better place."
Giles has played a pivotal role in analysing and interpreting complex economic issues for readers around the globe. With his incisive analysis and ability to distil complex economic concepts into language, we can all understand. He continues to make a profound impact on the understanding and discussion of economic affairs here in the UK and around the world.

Throughout his career at the Financial Times, Giles has covered a broad range of economic topics, from fiscal policy and central banking to trade and inequality. His reporting has provided crucial insights during economic uncertainty and financial turmoil. Most recently, during the fallout from the pandemic and the impacts of the Truss mini-budget, Giles was central to helping inform the debate.
Chris has received numerous accolades for his work, including the prestigious Royal Statistical Society's Statistical Excellence in Journalism Award, highlighting his commitment to accuracy and rigour in economic reporting. His expertise and depth of knowledge have earned him the respect of fellow journalists, economists, and policymakers worldwide.
Ahead of the announcement, Chris joined one of the first UCL Policy Lab events exploring Economic expertise in an era of populism and post-truth politics. As an Honorary Professor of Practice at the UCL Policy Lab, Giles will have the opportunity to engage with students, researchers, and academics, sharing his wealth of experience and insights.
