CPS members elected to RAS Council

Congratulations to CPS colleagues Professor Steve Miller and Karen Anne Devoil for their recent election to the Council of the Royal Astronomical Society as Vice-President (G) and Councillor (G) respectively.

Congratulations to CPS members Professor Steve Miller and Karen Anne Devoil for their recent election to RAS Council in the roles of Vice President (Geophysics) and Councillor (Geophysics), respectively.
Steve Miller is Emeritus Professor of Science Communication and Planetary Science at UCL, a founder member of the Europlanet European network of planetary scientists, as well as a former director of the CPS. His planetary science research interests cover the atmospheres of giant planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and exoplanets), the spectra of comets and interstellar chemistry.
Karen Anne Devoil is the CPS Marketing and Outreach Officer. She is a former marketing executive with over 30 years professional experience. Karen Anne studied Earth Science and Geology at the University of Reading, later going on to study Astronomy at UCL and then Planetary Science and Astrobiology at Birkbeck the University of London. She has been a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society for eight years and is currently serving on the RAS Committee for Diversity in Astronomy and Geophysics (CDAG), the UK Planetary Forum Leadership Committee, the UCL Your Universe Festival of Astronomy and Planetary Science organising committee and as Communications Officer on the Orbyts leadership team. Karen-Anne is also a registered ‘Space Inspirations’ STEM Ambassador, regularly arranging and taking part in outreach and engagement initiatives working with partner organisations and groups in her local area. She is an advocate for preserving dark skies and green spaces helping to promote these issues with public engagement activities such as ‘ Wonder of the Dark Sky’ stargazing events for the Colne Valley Country Park.
The RAS Council election results were announced at the Society's Annual General Meeting on Friday 9 May 2025, which also announced the new President-Elect Professor Jim Wild (Lancaster University), together with two new vice-presidents and four councillors. Steve Miller will serve as Vice President (G) for a term of 2 years and Karen Anne Devoil will serve as Councillor (G) for 3 years. We wish them well in their new roles!
