A warm welcome to our new part-time Marketing and Outreach Advisor, Karen Anne Devoil.

Headshot of Karen Anne Devoil

We are delighted to announce that Karen Anne Devoil has recently joined the Centre for Planetary Sciences at UCL/Birkbeck as the new part-time Marketing and Outreach Advisor.

Karen has over 30 years' experience in professional marketing and is very generously volunteering her time alongside her current position as a Creative, Media and Digital Executive at the music and media company BMG UK. She was previously at Universal Music Group for 17 years where she became Marketing Director UMTV.

Karen has been studying Astronomy and Planetary Science for several years, most recently at Birkbeck (Planetary Science) for 2 years and before that 2 years at UCL (Astronomy Certificate). She is also a Fellow of The Royal Astronomical Society and a registered STEM Ambassador.

Some of you may have already met Karen through her work with UCL’s Your Universe public outreach festival, where she has contributed for several years and run her own presentation stand (Is There Life on Mars) in 2020, as well as assisting Mark Fuller and Francisco Diego in promoting the event using her professional marketing skills. She has also taken part in many other outreach events, including International Asteroid Day 2021.

During her time with us, Karen will be focussing on raising the internal and external profile of the CPS and extending our range of outreach activities.

With her professional skills and interest in Astronomy/Planetary Science outreach, we have no doubt that Karen will be an invaluable addition to the CPS community and we are very excited to have her on board! In her own words:

It is a great pleasure to be joining the CPS community. I am very much looking forward to bringing my skills and enthusiasm to help advance and promote a variety of exciting new marketing and outreach initiatives to engage and inform the public as well as highlight the pioneering work done at the CPS.

Karen’s nominal working hours are 2-5pm on Thursday afternoons and she will be working remotely for the time being. Please feel free to introduce yourself or contact her with any outreach or marketing enquiries at karen.devoil.17@ucl.ac.uk
