Speaker: Professor Masaki Fujimoto (ISAS/JAXA)

Bio: Professor Masaki Fujimoto is the Deputy Director General of ISAS, JAXA, the science institute of the Japanese space agency. His major role at the institute is in future planning as well in coordination of international collaboration. Since he joined JAXA in 2006, he has been involved in multiple solar system exploration missions such as BepiColombo, JUICE, Hayabusa2, SLIM and MMX.

Talk title: Where do Hayabusa2 and SLIM lead JAXA space science to?

Abstract: Hayabusa2 (asteroid sample return) and SLIM (pin-point lunar landing) have been the recent successful missions of JAXA space science that one may categorize as impactful to the global community. By analyzing what have happened during critical events in these two missions, one starts to realize the common style that penetrates through. With the very recent successful test flight of JAXA’s brand new H3 launcher blended together, the ISAS style would be accelerated and multiple new missions that symbolize the style would be born. How will they reshape the landscape of the global solar system exploration and space science? The speaker is happy to discuss this topic with the audience.

Date: Monday 29th April 2024;  Time: 4pm
