IPLS PhD Retreat 2016

24 October 2016

The first IPLS PhD student retreat took place this month in Hove, a quiet town on the southern coast. IPLS PhD students met-up and spent three days in a lovely cottage near the sea.

The first day was entirely dedicated to the students in order for them to get to know each other. They challenged themselves in elaborate team building activities including, designing an alternative cell wall, assembling paper proteins and experiencing what a mechanical force balance really is.

The next morning, two international scientists, Dr. Andre Brown (Imperial College, UK) and Dr. Antoine Jegou (Institute Jacques Monod, France), joined along with the new IPLS strategic fellows, Dr. Andela Saric (UCL) and Dr. Shiladytia Banerjee (UCL). With them, the students started a series of scientific talks, alternating guest speakers and students. A wide range of topics were covered and they all gave rise to meaningful questions and useful exchanges of ideas. Along with 'experienced' students, the seven new students gave an important contribution to the scientific discussion. The science was accompanied by an intensive cooking competition. Throughout the days meals were entirely thought, designed and cooked by three student teams.

The informal environment was perfect to stimulate debate and conversation. Overall feedback was very positive both from student and PIs.
