The Bose group investigates experimental protocols to test the quantum nature of gravity. This includes a close collaboration with experimentalists cooling and levitating large masses.

Jonathan Oppenheim
Jonathan Oppenheim (co-director)

The Oppenheim group is exploring an alternative to quantum gravity, in which spacetime remains classical while quantum theory is modified resulting in an intrinsic breakdown in predictability that is mediated by spacetime itself.

 

Peter Barker
Peter Barker (Head of Experimental Research)

Peter Barker’s research has concentrated on the cooling, manipulation and transport of atoms, molecules and nanoparticles in optical tweezers. He is exploring levitated nano-mechanical systems for quantum sensing.

Christian Boehmer
Christian Boehmer

Prof Christian G Boehmer is the Head of Department of UCL Mathematics. His main research is in General Relativity and Cosmology. He is working on theories of gravity which can be used as effective descriptions to models where certain symmetries are broken at small scales. Such models can describe spacetimes where singularities are avoided by the effects of the new gravitational modes.

Rod Halburd
Rod Halburd

Rod Halburd works on integrable systems, the anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations, general relativity and complex analysis.  He is working on the transition region in which the motion of a mass orbiting a black hole changes from in-spiral to plunge.  In general relativity, planar gravitational waves and axis-symmetric stationary vacuum spacetimes are described by integrable systems, as is the geodesic structure of several physically important spacetimes.  A major theme in his research is the detection of integrability, not only in differential equations, but also in discrete and quantum systems.

Rosemary Harris

Rosemary Harris's research interests focus on stochastic non-equilibrium processes including: interacting particle systems, large deviations, fluctuation relations, as well as applications.

Betti Hartmann
Betti Hartmann

Betti Hartmann's research is General Relativity and Field Theory, including non-linear phenomena in flat and curved space-time, in particular black holes and (topological and non-topological) solitons, with applications to astrophysics, cosmology, condensed matter, and biophysics. Her current research includes applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence; solitons and black holes in AdS space-time; predictions of Grand Unified models and Superstring Theories for the primordial universe, in particular formation of topological defects

Tony Cubitt

Tony Cubitt is interested in many things, amongst which are mathematically rigorous toy models of AdS/CFT duality and it's connections with quantum error correction and Hamiltonian simulation.

Tania Monteiro works at the interface of quantum and classical regimes in realistic settings. She actively seeks to collaborate with experimentalists.

 

Johannas Noller
Johannas Noller

Johannas Noller's research takes place at the interface between gravitational wave science, cosmology, and particle physics, integrating methods that range from deriving theoretical bounds from high-energy physics, to developing data-driven numerical codes, to extracting observational constraints from current surveys in order to better understand gravity. I am particularly interested in dark energy.

Alessio Sarafini

Alessio Serafini is a researcher specializing in quantum information, particularly continuous variable quantum information, quantum optics, and quantum control theory. He is also involved in the study of Gaussian states and their applications in quantum protocols.

Marzena Szymanska

Marzena's research focuses on out-of-equilibrium collective phenomena in systems composed of light and matter, with particular interest in exciton-polaritons, cavity and circuit quantum electrodynamics and cold atoms.
