My research focus in the past decade has been on complex degenerative disorders of the brain, particularly Parkinson’s disease and Frontotemporal dementia. I started my career as a biochemist, investigating the relevance of cell waste disposal in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease. I soon developed a deep interest in bioinformatics and joined the International Frontotemporal Dementia Genetics Consortium (IFGC) analysis team. I realized that biomedical research is currently facing the challenge of translating genetic research into functional knowledge. This translation, which is essential for applying genetics knowledge to the improvement of human health, is somehow hampered by many technical difficulties that make genetic data interpretation and validation neither time nor cost-effective. My research sits at the interface between genetics and functional biology and is aimed at easing the bidirectional flow of information between genetics to functional models through bioinformatics and systems biology pipelines for -omics data processing.
I graduated in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at the University of Milan in 2005 and obtained a PhD in 2010 from the Open University (UK) in collaboration with the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research (Milan) working on a project focused on the analysis of amyloid aggregation and toxicity in Alzheimer’s disease. Ever since, I worked at the UCL Institute of Neurology and at the University of Reading prior joining the UCL School of Pharmacy in 2020.
