Information for Visitors

Please note, visitors who do not hold a current UCL ID card may gain access to the School of Pharmacy, including the Library, between 9am and 6pm on weekdays only. Library-issued reference and borrower's tickets are not UCL ID cards. Please contact the Library before making your visit. Access to all archival material is by prior appointment only. Please contact the Librarian, Michelle Wake at m.wake@ucl.ac.uk

Visitors and NHS staff from UCL’s affiliated Trusts

  • In order to access our library, you will need to bring your NHS staff ID or your UCL borrowing card.
  • Please check the Library catalogue (Explore) and contact us via telephone (020) 7753 5833 or via email sop.library@ucl.ac.uk before visiting us to ensure that we have the material you require and whether it has to be ordered in advance of your visit. Visitors who do not hold a current UCL ID card may gain access to the School of Pharmacy, including the Library, between 9am and 6pm on weekdays only.
  • Concerning access to electronic resources the Library subscribes to, visitors can have access to most of our resources on-site (except for restricted access) but would not be able to access resources offsite due to licence agreements.

Erasmus students and visiting students / staff to the School

  • Your UCL card is also your library card.  You will need this card to borrow, reserve and renew library material.
  • All visitor categories are granted reference access by default.  Borrowing access is only granted upon formal request through the Services system, subject to conditions being met and approved by Library membership staff.
  • If granted borrowing access, you will be able to borrow up to 5 items at a time.
  • Normal loan items are issued for up to four weeks at a time.  Fines for overdue items are charged at a rate of 20p per day for each normal loan and 30p per day for each 7-day and overnight loan item.

Students / staff from other University of London institutions

  • Under the University of London Libraries Access Agreement, undergraduate and taught postgraduate students of the University of London on production of their institutional ID card and proof of address can use the Library to consult printed materials for reference.
  • Staff and research postgraduate students are eligible to apply for a borrowing ticket with their institutional ID card, proof of address and a passport-sized photograph.  They would be eligible to borrow up to 5 items at a time.
  • Concerning access to electronic resources the Library subscribes to, visitors can have access to most of our resources on-site (except for restricted access) but would not be able to access resources offsite due to licence agreements.
  • Visitors do not have access to printing facilities in the building.  You can save documents on to a USB device.  The Library has machines which you can use to photocopy material and in order to use these, you will need to pay for this service.  Please ask Library Issue Desk staff for further details.
  • Concerning the use of personal laptops in the library with the wireless network, you will need to contact the Computer Unit, tel: (0207) 753 5838.

Staff and students from SCONUL Access member institution libraries

  • Staff and research students (Band A) from SCONUL Access member institutions can join the Library to borrow materials.  A list of participating libraries in the scheme can be found on the Sconul website.  In order to join, you will need to bring your SCONUL Access card and home institution card along to the Library Issue Desk.
  • The expiry date on your library record will be that which is stated on your SCONUL Access card.
  • SCONUL Access members can borrow up to 5 normal loan item for a period of up to 30 days.
  • Concerning access to electronic resources the Library subscribes to, visitors can have access to some of our resources on-site (except for restricted access) but would not be able to access resources offsite due to licence agreements.
  • Visitors do not have access to printing facilities in the building.  You can save documents on to a USB device.  The Library has machines which you can use to photocopy material and in order to use these, you will need to pay for this service.  Please ask Library Issue Desk staff for further details.
  • Concerning the use of personal laptops in the library with the wireless network, SCONUL cardholders should be able to gain access to Eduroam across UCL using their own institutional account.

Students / staff from other HE institutions (excluding University of London and SCONUL Access)

  • Students and staff from other HE institutions can use our Library for reference use only during vacation to consult print material we have in stock. 
  • Undergraduate and taught postgraduate students who wish to use UCL Library Services for reference during term-time will have to pay £7 a day, £20 a week or £30 a month. In order to use the library, we would ask you to bring along your institutional ID card and proof of address to the Library Issue Desk.
  • Concerning access to electronic resources the Library subscribes to, visitors can have access to some of our resources on-site (except for restricted access) but would not be able to access resources offsite due to licence agreements.

Outside visitors / members of the public

  • The Library permits you to use the Library for reference use only to consult material not easily available elsewhere, but does not allow you to borrow material. There is a charge for this service: £7 a day, £20 a week or £30 a month.
  • In order to use the Library, please bring along proof of identity and home address when you come to visit (e.g. driving licence, passport, utility / council tax bill, bank statement).
