The single crystal X-Ray Diffraction Crystallography Facility is currently managed by Dr Gary Parkinson.
The crystallographic system consists of a single wavelength diffractometer for the routine crystal collection of high quality diffraction data. It is ideally suited for both small molecule (< 0.91 Å resolution) and macromolecular structure determinations (large Titon CCD detector) using a fine focus copper X-ray source. The 4-circle kappa goniometer geometry allows for ease of crystal mounting and alignment combined with cryo-cooling (Oxford cryostream700) for rapid and efficient data collections.
Data processing
The data processing uses the latest CrysAlisPro software, while the Titan CCD detector combines a large active area (165 mm diameter) with excellent dynamic range and fast read-out times. It can also perform transmission powder diffraction, useful for various pharmaceutical materials.
The Unit’s services are central to the School’s Drug Discovery research programmes housed in the School of Pharmacy site in Bloomsbury.
Availability
The X-Ray diffraction equipment is available for use by all members of the School. However, to cover costs of the service contracts on these instruments, there is an hourly charge for their use. Bookings are made via Quartzy once registered. Please email for permission to use this service and to find out about current rates.

This item is regularly calibrated. The last calibration was completed on 16th April 2015.

The X-ray Diffraction Crystallography Facility is a fully equipped resource for the preparation, crystallisation and diffraction of crystals. The laboratory houses three microscopes: two Carl Zeiss Stemi SV 6 stereo zoom microscopes with polarisation filters and fibre optic lighting, and one with a camera attachment.
Additional equipment
Fiive temperature-controlled crystallisation incubators set at 4°C, 10°C, 12°C, 18°C, 37°C. We are also fully equipped to cryo-freeze crystals, recover and store them for later use or transfer.
