English language proficiency

All students whose first language is not English must demonstrate adequate proficiency in the English language.

See UCL prospectus for English Language requirements for each programme of study.

Language courses

The UCL Centre for Languages & International Education offers full and part-time English for Academic Purposes and undergraduate foundation courses for international students.

Full-time courses

Preparation for university at university
All UCL Language Centre preparatory course lectures, seminars, tutorials (and practical laboratory sessions) are delivered within the university. Students are registered as UCL students and have access to all UCL, University of London and Language Centre academic, welfare, and social and cultural resources.

Preparation for graduates

Pre-sessional English Courses are intensive and academically challenging courses normally intended for international students who are planning to study a graduate degree (MA, MSc, LLM or MPhil/PhD) at UCL, but do not meet the English language requirement of their conditional offer.

Part-time Academic English courses are available at UCL for PhD and other graduate research students who want to enhance their academic writing and oral communication skills.

Preparation for undergraduates

The University Preparatory Certificate for Science and Engineering (UPCSE) is a full-time foundation course in science and engineering for international students who are aiming to gain access to undergraduate degree programmes at UCL and other top UK universities. This course has an excellent record of progression to UCL degree programmes.
