Job description
Applications are invited from UCL (second year and beyond) PhD students to assist with small-group (tutorial) teaching 2025/26.
The purpose of the SPGTA role is to support teaching and learning on our first year Core modules (‘Writing History’ and ‘Making History’), working with the academic module leads to deliver small-group teaching for students taking these. ‘Writing History’ (term 1) and ‘Making History’ (term 2) are taught in small groups and each SPGTA will be expected to teach up to 3 classes.
The pay schedules for these assignments are featured in Appendix A. All terms and conditions of employment are as per the UCL PGTA Code of Practice.
The following is a list of the modules for which we currently have SPGTA opportunities for 2025/26:
Writing History (HIST0007) Writing History, a half-unit module taught in Term 1 (September-December), aims to develop students’ skills and confidence as writers. The module is designed to provide our students with the opportunity to discuss within a small group how best to approach research and writing at university. The small group teaching is complemented with lectures.
Making History (HIST0008) This module is taught in Term 2 (January-March) to first year undergraduate students and aims to encourage creative thinking about the study of the past. The module asks students to engage with the rich historical resources available in London, and, through individual and collaborative work, deliver innovative outputs. We are looking to recruit doctoral students in History who have an interest in supporting students’ research, presentation, design and team-working skills. Candidates with experience of working in material culture, space/place, and public history are especially encouraged to apply.

Key responsibilities
- Teaching assistance through the facilitation of seminars and/or workshops;
- Class preparation and meeting with lecturers/module organisers;
- Marking students' work;
- Giving feedback to students
Requirements for role
Candidates must be registered PhD students, have the ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, with students, academic and support staff at all levels; ability to tutor and support year 1 and 2 UG students on the relevant modules; and have the specialist skills appropriate to the course taught.
