Job description

UCL’s Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose seeks to appoint a number of Postgraduate Teaching Assistants / Teaching Assistants for the 2026-27 academic session to assist with taught modules.

The main duties of the post are to support teaching, facilitate seminars and carry out timely coursework / examination marking.

Successful PGTA candidates will be pursuing a postgraduate degree, preferably associated with Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, or studying a related subject. IIPP also hires non-postgraduate TAs if they have extensive knowledge/experience of material covered in the modules. Previous teaching experience is an advantage but is not essential.

All PGTA / TAs at UCL are Grade 6 posts in the Teaching career track, equivalent to Research Assistant posts in the Research tracks. Appointments will start at grade 6, spine point 22, of the UCL salary scale. Prior teaching experience is considered in determining spine points. PGTAs /TAs will normally be contracted for a maximum total of 110 hours of work per module. PGTAs / TAs will be paid for attendance at training sessions, lectures, tutorial preparation and teaching time, plus marking (expected hours will be agreed in advance).

It is expected that the majority of offers for appointments in Term 1 will be sent out during July 2026. Key responsibilities

• Teaching assistance through the facilitation of seminars and/or workshops
• Class preparation and meeting with lecturers/module organisers
• After-class contact time with students, including time-tabled office hours
• Marking students' work
• Giving feedback to students

Requirements for role

Successful PGTA candidates will be pursuing a postgraduate degree, preferably associated with Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, or studying a related subject. IIPP also hires non-postgraduate TAs if they have extensive knowledge/experience of material covered in the modules.

Previous teaching experience is an advantage but is not essential. PGTAs/TAs should have a strong familiarity with the course content of the module to which they are applying, and those applying to teach on economics-focused modules (IIPP0007 and IIPP0008) should have an economics education, ideally to Masters level.
