Job description
UCL Institute of the Americas is a leading multidisciplinary specialist institution for the study of Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America and the United States. We offer the UK's largest programme of undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees on the Americas. Our research was ranked 1st in Area Studies and Impact in the REF 2021.
The Institute wishes to make a number of appointments for Postgraduate Teaching Assistants (PGTAs) for the 2025-26 academic year, to teach seminar groups on one or more of five undergraduate modules in the BA History and Politics of the Americas programme.
The modules are:
- AMER0038 - Encountering the Americas
- AMER0039 - Introduction to Politics
- AMER0050 - The Making of Modern America, 1920-present
- AMER0074 - History and Politics of Latin America c1930 to the Present
- AMER0053 - Investigating the Americas
Key responsibilities
- Teaching assistance through the facilitation of seminars and/or workshops;
- Class preparation and meeting with lecturers/module organisers;
- After-class contact time with students, including time-tabled office hours;
- Marking students' work;
- Giving feedback to students
Requirements for role
Candidates should be registered for a PhD, have relevant specialist skills and knowledge appropriate to the module.
They should possess high levels of literacy and numeracy and be able to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, with students, academic and support staff at all levels.
They should have excellent working knowledge of MS Office and have excellent organisational and time management skills.
They should be proficient with online teaching platforms, notably Moodle; be able to teach both face to face and online; and have the ability to tutor and support year 1 and 2 undergraduate students on the relevant modules.
Candidates should have the ability to be flexible and to respond to changing priorities in a busy environment. They should be able to work independently for short period as well as working as part of a team, recognising when advice/input needs to be sought. They should have a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
