PGTA BA First Year
The Department of English Language & Literature is recruiting Postgraduate Tutorial Assistants for BA English first-year students. Responsibilities will include providing five 30-minute one-to-one tutorials per tutee in both teaching terms, and marking and providing feedback on four tutorial essays and a commentary exercise per term for each tutee. Tutors will also provide guidance to tutees on academic issues or minor pastoral issues connected with their academic work.

ENGL0012 Critical Commentary & Analysis; ENGL0005 Introduction to English Literature
PGTAs will teach on the third-year BA English ENGL0012 Commentary and Analysis module in either the Autumn or Spring Term 2025-26 and / or the ENGL0005 Introduction to English Literature module which is offered to students on the Arts and Sciences (BASc) degree in the Spring Term 2026.

Requirements for role

PGTA BA First Year

• Applicants should be in at least their second year of working towards a PhD in English Literature at UCL, and must be able to commit to being present on the Bloomsbury campus for the full duration of the teaching terms. We welcome applicants from other UCL departments who can demonstrate in their application the ability to teach English Literature.
• A helpful and proactive attitude, along with an understanding of the challenges facing students, is essential, as is the ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, with students, academic and support staff at all levels.
• All applicants must have the right to work in the UK. The Department is unable to sponsor applicants for the right to work.

ENGL0012 Critical Commentary & Analysis; ENGL0005 Introduction to English Literature
Applicants should be registered on a programme of doctoral study with a proven specialism in English Literature at UCL.

Applicants will be expected to:

• Complete the UCL Arena One Workshop before commencement of teaching.
• Attend a training session led by the Department Tutor and Graduate Tutor in September.
• Engage with other mandatory training required to support their role.
• Be familiar with online learning environments, e.g. Moodle.
• Commit to be present on the Bloomsbury campus for the full duration of the term(s) in which they are teaching.
• Uphold confidentiality in regards to students’ performance, records and marks.

For the Critical Commentary and Analysis tutor role, please indicate whether you would prefer to teach in the Autumn or Spring Term.

If you wish to teach on the Introduction to English Literature module, please indicate in order of preference the texts you would like to teach.

For all applicants, an indication of whether an Arena One Gateway Workshop has been completed should be stated in the application (this is a mandatory requirement for all PGTAs to complete before they start teaching).
Applicants must ask their supervisor for permission to teach in the 2025-26 academic year and to send a full reference to the Department Manager.
