Modules:
The Department of EPS wishes to make appointments for Postgraduate Teaching Assistants for the autumn, spring and summer terms, 2026-2027 academic year.
Sociology of Education module: 127 hours. This module takes place in Term 1.
Understanding Education Research module: 107 hours. This module takes place in Term 1
Understanding Education Policy module: 127 hours. This module takes place in Term 2.
Sociology of Race and Education module. 127 hours. This module takes place in Term 3
Number of hours: up to 180 hours per academic year
Start date: 1st August 2026

Job description
The purpose of the PGTA role is to support teaching and learning in our Sociology Cluster MA (covering the MA programmes Sociology of Education, Social Justice and Education and Policy Studies in Education). This will involve working with the academic module leads to deliver small group teaching for students taking the above modules in the EPS Department.
Main duties of the post are tutorial class teaching, regular meetings with the module team,provision of feedback to students, providing support sessions for students (e.g. office hours / drop ins), managing on-line discussion forums, attendance reporting, and, in some cases, coursework and other forms of assessment.
Teaching Assistants will be given training in support of their roles.

Key responsibilities
- Teaching assistance through the facilitation of seminars and/or workshops;
- Class preparation and meeting with lecturers/module organisers;
- Marking students' work;
- Giving feedback to students
Requirements for role
The posts are open to current registered UCL Post Graduate Research (PGR) students only.
The successful candidate will be educated to Masters degree level (or having equivalent experience), in a Sociology of Education related field and working towards a relevant postgraduate degree (PhD) at UCL. You will have specialist knowledge appropriate to the module taught and experience of managing virtual learning environments including Moodle design and Talis reading lists. In addition, you will have experience of teaching and supporting students at various levels and have the ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
