Job description

There are a wide range of roles, including PG and UG teaching and assessment, online learning, and leading the delivering co-curricular activities (journal club, basic biology workshops). Roles will include laboratory demonstrating, teaching on taught sessions, and supporting student assessment of taught modules. PGTA training will be provided and Higher Education Academy Fellowship applications are encouraged and supported (see below). Each PGTA role will have a minimum of 15 hours and a maximum of 60 per term. Specific roles include:  

Journal club: We are looking for a Journal club lead, where you will critically engage students with literature within the fields of nanomedicine, biomaterial science, stem cells and tissue engineering. The papers discussed are particularly aligned with the taught modules and the journal club sessions can be attended by UG and PG students within the DSIS. These sessions are delivered in Term 1 and Term 2. The post holder would lead/organise the sessions and support student learning, including preparation of online (Moodle) learning materials.  Up to 30 PGTA hours per PGTA. Basic cell biology workshops: To lead and organise this co-curricular activity designed for non-biomedical science students (medics, physical scientists), these sessions are designed to help harmonise cell biology understanding across several MSc programmes. Topics can be flexible but have previously included; cell cycle, cell differentiation, cell communication, cell metabolism, endocytosis, immunity and inflammatory responses).  The post holder would lead/organise the sessions and support student learning, including preparation of online (Moodle) learning materials.  Up to 25 PGTA hours. Assessment and delivery of taught modules: Assistance in the delivery and the assessment components of taught modules. Roles will include helping with the administration, teaching, marking and providing feedback. 15 60 hours for each position depending on the number of PGTAs appointed.

Requirements for role

Please note that prior teaching experience is not essential. The Division of Surgery and Interventional Science (DSIS) will provide tailored local training, in addition to the support offered by Arena. We also encourage all DSIS PGTAs to apply for Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA); a dedicated workshop and mentorship will be available to support your application.
